Screenmobile University

All franchise systems offer new franchisees some sort of training before they are allowed to officially be open for business. The length of the training differs with each franchise, some lasting anywhere from a week to a month depending on the intricacies of the business. The franchisor needs to guarantee the franchisee is capable of producing a level of work that is expected to help strengthen the brand. It would be unacceptable to order your favorite Big Mac at a brand new McDonalds for it to taste like something you've never had before. The point of staying loyal to a brand is because you already know what to expect from them, regardless of where they are located or how long they've been in business.

Screenmobile offers our new franchisees two weeks of training at Screenmobile University, held at our Corporate Office in Thousand Palms, CA.  Franchisees are exposed to classroom training to learn about the brand, marketing and operating system, then spend the remaining time learning production in our custom built Training House. During the ten days, the franchisees will work with different trainers as well as some guest vendors. Screenmobile takes pride in offering a well-balanced training schedule to ensure a great start for our franchisees.

On the final day of training, we take our franchisees out to a celebratory lunch where the Walker Family (Scott, Monty L., Dillon and Trevor) share advice, stories and a meal before heading back to the Corporate Office to graduate. Each franchise is awarded a certificate of completion and is welcomed to continue working on anything they have questions on or if ready, leave Screenmobile University to head home.

We've had four locations graduate from Screenmobile University last week. They all graduated on Friday and are now back home preparing to open their Screenmobile locations. Pictured below (from left to right):

Evan Grissom and his business partner, Jaime Mejia, co-owners of two locations - Screenmobile of Glendale/Burbank, CA and Screenmobile of La Canada Flintridge, CA. Brett Brumbaugh with the Screenmobile of West Palm Beach, FL and David Pawek, newest owner of the Screenmobile of Marin & Sonoma Counties, CA

Training does not end there... Right after SMU graduation, new franchisees begin an intense thirteen week Fast Start Program which consists of weekly support calls. In addition, the Screenmobile Corporate Team is available by phone or Facetime for those tricky installations, and continued learning at regional meetings and annual conventions.

If you want to learn more about owning your own Screenmobile franchise, reach out to our Sales Team at franchiseinfo@screenmobile.com or call them at 303-997-0737.

Perhaps you'll be our next Screenmobile University graduate!

Dogs and Cats - Members of the Family or Screen Destructors?

Most of us have pets and we love and care for them like they are members of the family.   But what do you do when they repeatedly tear up your window and door screens?

Sometimes it feels like a bit of a contradiction but with Screenmobile's pet products such as pet doors, screens, and guards, you can feel comfortable loving both your screens and your pets again.
We offer pet products to make your home more pet friendly and your screens pet resistant.

Screenmobile sells premier pet product items, such as quality heavy duty dog doors and cat doors, animal resistant screens and screen guards that are a barrier between your pets and your screens.
Are you looking for a new screen door with a pet door already installed? Would you like a pet door put in your existing screen door? We can do it. Looking for a patio pet door? We've got it. Do you like your current door but want to make it more pet resistant? We carry pet resistant screens which provide excellent scratch protection.

We carry 3 different types of screens that are pet resistant.
Pet Screens, Tuff Screens and Super Screens. The size of your pet and the damage that he or she does will determine which screen would best suit your needs. For enhanced screen and door protection, we also carry pet guards for screen doors. Pet guards are attractive metal grates that block your pet from scratching at the screens.

Beyond our beloved pets damaging our screens, screens also help keep our pets in the house and pests out. May is National Pet Month and in conjunction with that, the Fort Bend Star released an article about how the Screenmobile of Katy-Sugarland is doing their part to help keep pets safe. Here's a link to the article: https://bit.ly/2HRQWeK

Discovery Day? What's that?

Before I started working in the world of franchising, I had never heard the term – Discovery Day.   It almost sounded like an outing planned for preschool children.  When you Google the term you get search results stating that Discovery Day in the Bahamas is a public holiday celebrating the of the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the new world; or, colleges have Discovery Days to allow a peek inside to see what life is like on campus; or an event set up at a science center to get kids excited about math, science and technology.  These are not the Discovery Days I am writing about here.

The term I am referring to has to do with franchising.  The International Franchise Association, courtesy of The Educated Franchisee’s Glossary of Franchise Terms defines Discovery Day as:

An event set up by the franchisor so that potential franchisees may learn more about becoming a franchisee. A discovery day typically takes place at the franchisors headquarters and is often the final step in the due diligence process. It provides the opportunity to meet the management team, support team, and trainers face‐to‐face. Occasionally called “Meet The Team Day” or “Open House.”

At Screenmobile, our Discovery Day consists of a tour of our building, meeting the key corporate staff that will be providing training and support, the history of the company and lots and lots of questions – both from the corporate team and the prospective franchisee, lunch out with the staff, a field visit to learn how you will make money and more opportunities to ask questions.  Time permitting, we even teach you how to make a window screen.

Our Discovery Day is scheduled at the end of our Education Process and after the prospects have time to validate with our franchisees.  When the prospective franchisee arrives, they usually find that there is a lot more to the screening world than they realized.

We award a franchise, only if the entire corporate team agrees that the prospective franchisee will be a good fit.  Would you be a good fit for Screenmobile?  Find out - You can fill out a contact form to get more information from our sales team here.  http://franchise.screenmobile.com/get-started-2/

We've hosted two Discovery Days in the past two weeks, and are proud to announce that both resulted in the addition of new franchisees. Here they are during their Discovery Days:

Evan Grissom and Jaime Mejia

Brett Brumbaugh

Hopefully we will be seeing YOU at a Discovery Day soon!

Screenmobile Steadily Grows Number of Franchises

When we were children, we were read the story of “The Tortoise and the Hare” by Aesop. If you remember, the hare speeding to win the race while the tortoise took his time. But in the end, the slow and steady tortoise won the race.

Now I’m sure you’re wondering what that has to do with franchising and more importantly, Screenmobile. Well, Screenmobile is like the tortoise. Having been in franchising for over 30 years, our Corporate Team has learned how to move at a pace that will ensure success for everyone involved.

Our education process can last a couple of months all the way up to a year depending on many different factors. We do our absolute best to ensure that not only is our potential franchisee a perfect fit for Screenmobile but, that Screenmobile is a perfect fit for them as well, after all, we are agreeing to a 10 year relationship.

With that being said, the process has been streamlined and we’ve had a tremendous growth over the last few years adding 40 franchise locations (new and resales) to our system since 2015. In 2018 alone we’ve added 5 new locations:

 2 resale locations:

With a list of others still in the pike.

When you go through the Screenmobile Education Process and have a chance to validate (call to ask questions) with our franchisees, you’ll notice that they are just like you. Hardworking individuals trying to provide a good life for them and their families while not having to sacrifice dinner at home, soccer games or dance recitals because they control their schedule. I’ve spoken with new franchisees attending their first annual Screenmobile Convention and they mentioned how nervous they were to meet everyone but, once they got in the room and started chatting, they quickly realized that they were truly among their peers and the conversations flowed naturally.

Becoming a Screenmobile franchisee is so much more than having the financial ability to purchase a franchise. It’s this attention to detail, our carefully thought out Education Process, that may make Screenmobile a tortoise but, with a 99% franchisee renewal rate and franchisees that have been with us for over 30 years, I’d say we are winning the race.

If you’re considering a career change or more so a change in your life, financial independence and the support of an amazing franchise system, I urge you to start your Screenmobile Education Process by contacting our Franchise Development Team today – franchiseinfo@screenmobile.com. I promise you won’t be disappointed. Let us guide you to the finish line!

What to consider when deciding between a Sliding Screen Door and a Retractable Screen Door

Living in Southern California, screens on our windows and doors are a must. But, honestly, for anyone wanting to enjoy a cool breeze or even just listening out for your children as they play in the backyard with the door open and don’t want any debris or pesky bugs coming in the house, screens are the way to go.

For the most part, houses are being purchased with screens on them as they are an added value in a sale (we receive calls from realtors all of the time). Standard Sliding Screen Doors are typically what is on a home but, retractable screen doors are becoming more popular.

With retractable screen doors growing in popularity and sliding screen doors commonly found on a home, how do we decide which works best for us and our home?

While the standard sliding screen door is long lasting, durable and cheap(er) to repair, retractable screen doors are easier to maintain, can retract when not in use and are affordable.

Sliding Screen Doors would be recommended in heavier traffic areas or homes with pets as a pet guard or pet door can be added.

Retractable Screen Doors are recommended for front doors (less of an eyesore, retracts into housing when not in use), tight spaces such as a small garage door, French doors, and when trying to preserve a view. Retractables are considered safer for the reason that if someone trips into one, the screen is designed to push out of the housing instead of knocking out the entire screen door.

Although both are available in a variety of colors, retractable screen doors can be made in custom wood grain colors to match your existing door.

So, sliding screen doors or retractable screen doors… there are a few things to consider besides just your personal preference. Remember, if you are unsure, ask your Screenmobile Field Tech for their opinion. Screens are our thing!

When should you replace your screens?

We live in a busy world and our list of things to accomplish each day is long and sometimes unrealistic. So, in our fast paced life, who really has time to stop and even notice that our window screens are worn? But, just like stopping to smell the roses, you should pause to notice your screens.

Window and door screens add value in many ways. Having a screen on your windows and doors help keep out pesky bugs including mosquitoes. As you are aware, the West Nile and Zika Virus are both carried by mosquitoes, and a suggested method of preventing a bite, is screens on your home.

Sun control screens work by absorbing solar heat and dissipating it before it reaches windows and doors, therefore cutting the cost of your electric bill. Security Screens offer safety and security while still allowing airflow. Pet resistant screens are designed to put up with the “ruff” treatment your pet may dish out from time to time.

Are your windows and/or doors bare? If you answered yes, you should look into screens. But, if you already have screens, do you know when you should get them replaced?

Regularly maintaining your screens, in direct sunlight should be replaced every 3-5 years otherwise, in a shaded area could be replaced every 5-7 years, some may last longer.

There are times that require you to take action instead of waiting for your screens to age to replace. For example:
  1.  A tear in the screen
  2.  Loose screen, spline coming out
  3.  Screen turning white from brittle fiberglass
  4.  Broken pull tabs
  5.  Bent frame
  6.  Discoloring of the frame

When you’re unsure, you can always contact your local Screenmobile. We offer FREE estimates for our customers. A knowledgeable, professionally trained technician will come to your home and evaluate your screen needs and then provide you with their recommendation. In most cases, all work can be done on-site in the first visit.

What's in a Review?

Reviews are a way for you, the customer, to get a glimpse at the business ethic of a company prior to hiring them. Most people today rely heavily on reviews to aid them in their decision making. As a service based company, Screenmobile recognizes this and strives for a great rating. Our franchisees always try to provide a 5 star customer experience.

Today I read an interesting article from the ProRemodeler Magazine titled “What Customers Want” by Executive Editor Sal Alfano. He says that the “buying experience” is as important as or more important to people than the stuff they buy. Alfano looked at the reviews for Zen Windows, a window franchise and noticed that the reviews focused more on simple terms such as “easy,” “simple,” “fast,” “communicated,” and “timely” before “price”. This shows that yes, you want the job done right but a completed job comes after the initial phone call, the quoting process, and installation. You want to be wow’d from the first hello all the way to you say goodbye once the job is completed.

I took a look at some reviews from our franchisee sites, it looks as though as long as Screenmobile is active on a site, our reviews are on par.

See for yourself:

                Google                 5 Stars         7 reviews

                Facebook             5 Stars          4 reviews

                Yelp                     4.5 Stars       13 reviews

                Google                 5 Stars        3 reviews

                Facebook            5 Stars         5 reviews

                Yelp                     5 Stars        2 reviews

                Google                 5 Stars         6 reviews

                Facebook            No Reviews

                Yelp                     5 Stars        2 reviews

                Google                 No Reviews

                Facebook             No Reviews

                Yelp                     5 Stars         10 reviews

                Google                 5 Stars        1 review

                Facebook             5 Stars        6 reviews

                Yelp                     4.5 Stars     29 reviews

With that, there’s something to be said about the company that receives a negative review and responds. Let’s be honest, no-one can be on their A game 24/7/365, but, for a company to take ownership of their mistake or perhaps correct a miscommunication on a public forum, that should also be considered in your decision making process. We are all human.

So, continue to create reviews (we love them) and read reviews because Screenmobile is doing our part to ensure you’ll hire us for any and all of your screening needs. You call, We screen!

Manufacturing a career with screens

Screenmobile started with a father and his two son’s (Monty M, Scott and Monty L. Walker) recognizing a need for on-site screen installation and repair. In less than two years they had two locations and began franchising. Their first franchise location was purchased by Monty M’s daughter, Kelly and her husband Dale Dennis with the Screenmobile of East San Gabriel Valley, CA. That location is still owned and operated by the Dennis’. Both of their son in laws own neighboring Screenmobile franchise locations – Screenmobile of Corona/Riverside, Screenmobile of Fontana/Rialto and Screenmobile of Victorville/Apple Valley.

Dale & Kelly Dennis are our typical Screenmobile franchisees. Screenmobile franchisees make a career with their franchise, many have been part of our system for 10, 20 and even 30 years. Again, with Corporate based in Southern California, it makes sense that the majority of our long time franchisees are also based here helping for the Screenmobile name to be well known and respected. Following are a few more long time franchisees still in business today:

Screenmobile of East San Gabriel Valley – Dale & Kelly Dennis 33 years

Screenmobile of San Fernando Valley – Max & son, Kelly Gordon 30 years

Screenmobile of Southern Orange County – Matthew Rudar 21 years

Screenmobile of Long Beach – Greg Reedy 32 years

Screenmobile of Boise - Dean & Jolyn Callen 33 years

Screenmobile of Santa Barbara - Greg & Dodie Gorman 31 years

Screenmobile of Scottsdale - Marty Murphy 30 years

If you’re out there either needing screens or even wanting to start your own business and you find yourself reading this blog, reach out to us. Our customers and franchisees alike are satisfied with the Screenmobile brand.

Screenmobile of Delmarva Offers New Innovative Product

Blake and Cindy McGrath own Screenmobile of Delmarva, a screen repair and replacement business, have announced their new screen retention approach for seaside decks.

Their high-tension method is perfect for spindles within railings and they can install the system without getting in the way of beautiful waterfront or golf course views.

The McGraths recognized a need when they began seeing neighbors and seaside property owners replacing spindles with glass and fighting against Mother Nature in an effort to keep the glass clean.  McGrath’s experience with the many versatile uses of screening materials inspired him to develop a new method that incorporates high-tension couplings and heavy-duty screens to serve the needs of residents, but he can do it at a much lower price point. The system requires only a few minutes to maintain because and cleaning it only requires the occasional rinsing with a hose.

“Blake has always explored new uses for screening materials,” said Cindy McGrath. “People think of screen in the traditional sense and with the development of a new generation of products, the retaining system seemed like a perfect blend of form and function.”

“It pains me every time I see someone with rag and soapy water cleaning deck glass, especially since I know that there is a less expensive, more practical way,” said Blake. “No one wants, or should have, to work that hard in the laid-back seaside communities we serve.”

Another product offered in perfect harmony with the seaside lifestyle is a motorized garage door screen. This product utilizes the same heavy-duty screening material. “Motion Screens installed on a garage door is ideal for crab feasts, creating a workout area or even an occasional cigar,” said Blake. “With the push of a button, an additional screened-in room creates an area perfect for entertaining.”

Blake purchased a Screenmobile franchise and set up his mobile screening repair and replacement company based in Ocean City and Selbyville. As an entrepreneur, he saw that Screenmobile’s on-site services focus on customer satisfaction and they were desperately needed in the area. His company takes its Screenmobile trucks and fully self-contained trailers equipped with generators and on-board chop saws to a customer’s location and complete most jobs the same day.

The average home has 12 to 15 window screens. Giving them your attention now and then can save you money, ensure better views and keep bugs out.

Experts recommend washing all of your screens twice a year to get rid of grime. That is important whether they are made of aluminum or fiberglass with a vinyl coating.

“If you think of them as a filter, you wouldn’t want to breathe all the dust and the dirt that builds up,” said Scott Walker, president and owner of Screenmobile, a mobile window and door screening company with close to 100 locations throughout the country.

The easiest way to start is by marking screens so you’ll remember which window they fit, said Colleen Maiura, a spokeswoman with Lowe’s Home Improvement stores.

Use a marker or a small piece of tape that’s strong enough not to be washed away by the garden hose. Maiura suggests a cleaning solution of 1 cup ammonia, 3 cups water and a squirt of dish detergent.

Lay the screens on a flat surface, thoroughly wet them with a hose and use a squirt bottle to apply the cleaning mix. Leave it on for about 10 minutes, use a soft-bristled brush to remove stubborn grime, then rinse. Don’t scrub aluminum screens too hard; you could dent them.

Maiura suggests shaking screens to remove excess water. If you have fiberglass ones, you can gently snap them with a towel to send water drops flying and prevent hard water stains.

If you pay someone to wash your windows, it’s a good idea to inspect the screens beforehand. That way you won’t blame washers for tears already there, and you can ask them to pay for any damages that occur during their work.

Repairs for a reasonThe point of having window screens is to let you open up your home to fresh air while keeping bugs and debris out. Rips and tears in the mesh, or bent screen frames, defeat that purpose.

Walker said you can do some minor repairs on your own. Inexpensive patch kits available at home improvement stores include small pieces of mesh that grab around holes and close them up. Pieces of household tape can cover up tiny tears. Neither option is attractive, Walker adds, but they can serve as quick fixes in otherwise good screens.

Repaint wooden screen frames if needed. Paint will help seal the wood and keep it from warping.

Preventing damage

Children and pets can be especially tough on screens and screen doors. Pet screens can be mounted on sliding screen doors for easy access for pets that enjoy the outdoors.

For those who might have used an elbow to keep a swinging screen door from closing too quickly, there’s a better option that won’t cost you a repair. Check the top of your door for a piston mechanism that you can turn and increase the pressure, to make the door close more slowly.

To keep window screens and doors sliding smoothly, Walker suggests skipping oil-based lubricants and instead using a silicone-based lubricant, such as furniture polish.

If you have the storage space, cleaning screens in the fall and then storing them away during the winter can extend their life, experts say.

Replace as needed

If a screen has large or multiple holes, or if its frame is bent or broken, then it’s time for a new one.

“Our rule of thumb is that if the frame doesn’t seal up against the window, then the bugs can come around there, so you’d need to replace it,” Walker said.

Fiberglass screens, which have a vinyl coating, will begin to show white strands, which means “there is virtually no integrity” left in the screen, he adds.

New products

If you’re switching screens, consider a charcoal color for better visibility. Fine-mesh screens can block small bugs and improve your view. The screens are made of super-fine strands so homeowners see less screen and more scenery.

Other new products include strong pet screens that cats can climb without tearing and retractable screen doors that are mounted on doorjambs so they’re hidden when homeowners don’t need them.

Homeowners will also start seeing strong, stainless steel screens on the market that offer some security.

“You get the look of a screen door, but the benefits of a security door,” said Walker.
