Are you prepared? National Preparedness Month

September is National Preparedness month. Screenmobile would like to give you a few ways toproperly prepare you and your family. National Preparedness month reminds us to prepare in all areas of life and there are three basic points addressed by the Boston Public Health Commission: Get Ready, Be Safe, Stay Healthy. Screenmobile would like to address the “Be Safe” points of this campaign:

  • Understanding your surrounding

  • Keep food and water safe

  • Learn basic health skills

  • Access official information

As part of “understand your surroundings”, one aspect is home safety. Window screens are something that need to be secured in your home. Screenmobile would like you to provide with you with some quick tips in order to help secure windows. Some tips we offer are:

  • When doing spring cleaning/painting be sure windows are not painted or nailed shut

  • If you have young children consider having a Guarda window installed. They are a secure window to leave open but have a fire release.

  • Keep furniture - or anything children can climb - away from windows. Children may use such objects as a climbing aid. Check our child safety section for more information.

  • Have an escape plan: “Windows provide a secondary means of escape from a burning home. Determine your family's emergency escape plan and practice it. Remember that children may have to rely on a window to escape in a fire. Help them learn to safely use a window under these circumstances."(screenmobile.com)

Another part of understanding your surrounding is your environment regarding  animals and insects. They can carry disease and  by making sure that your loved animals are up to date on their shots can help stop the spread diseases and insects. If there is an animal that is infected to be sure to have Animal Control come in and take care of the animal instead of putting you or your family at risk.

Keeping your food and water safe is also a very important part of National preparedness month.  If you do not keep your food or water safe, your survival is put at risk. Drinking water can be compromised by bursting pipes or floods.  To make sure your water is safe to drink click here

Lastly, learn basic first aid skills and  have access to official information. Learning basics health skills can potentially save you or your loved ones life. Basic CPR and First Aid classes are offered very regularly by the American Heart Association nationwide. Accessing official information is crucial in an emergency.  Having information before and during an emergency can be very beneficial for your safety. Usually, your local City Hall is the place to obtain your emergency plan information. They can also let you know what to do during an emergency.

None of us want an emergency to happen but unfortunately they are happening too often and we at Screenmobile want you to be prepared in the best way possible. Please be sure to visit our website or talk to your service tech.  They will be able to help you with any questions you have regarding window screen safety.

Guarda Security Door

September 3, 2014 at 11:48 AMMonty Walker

Everyone likes to open their windows and doors and let that fresh air in, but some have a concern for the safety associated with leaving a screen product to protect us. We have a solution, The Guarda Security Door. Created by C.R. Laurence, this door is the ultimate security door.

In its description itself it gives away the type of door you are looking at, security. However the difference with this security door is that you don’t feel like you are looking out a jail cell with the bars across, you have an unobstructed view. The “screen” material is grade meshtech Powder Coated Stainless steel security mesh. Which looks like a screen fabric it keep the bugs out and vent the house but it is a Stainless Steel instead of  a Fiberglass. This feature doesn't allow it to be cut through with a knife or kick in the screen.  The frame comes in a variety of colors to match your house.

It is also very durable, making for those who have family members or friends who accidentally walk through screen doors very difficult to do so.  In areas where there is a lot of wind Guarda doors and windows are good to have on as they can withstand severe storms and still be in tact. The frame  is secured to the frame of the house with 3-5 inch long screws causing for a very secure and solid anchoring to the house structure. The exposed screws are then covers with a screw cap to prevent any tampering. Also that mesh is very secure and can withstand quite a bit of force from flying objects. There has been individuals involved in martial arts that have tried to kick the door down and are unable to do so.

Another wonderful feature is the multipoint lock system for unbeatable security. When its locked its really secure.

Monty from California a proud Gaurda front and back swinging door owner can shead some light on this topic: “Let me tell you about our newest (we already have one on our front door) Gaurda door installed on our back swinging door.  We absolutely love it.  “For the first time in over 40 years we left our back door open all night because  for the first time ever we felt secure enough to do so.”  The reward was that the next morning our entire house was filled with clean cool fresh air instead of air that we and our two cats shared every night.  Even the cats seemed to rejoice in the new fresh feel and aroma of the naturally chilled air engulfing our entire home.  “This has got to be one of our greatest home improvements projects ever.”  When measured from luxury versus cost we consider it priceless  and would highly recommend it to everybody, especially if they have and love pets, no matter what kind of pets.”

There are some  negative aspects  associated with this door system.

  • One being  the cost, starting  anywhere between $1200-1400 for a standard door and $300-500 for a standard window. for comaprison a  Aluminum security doors run between $600-900 and is more of a safety door that a true security door. A wrought Iron security door custom made will coat between $600-1200 depending on the style.  It can get expensive to replace every door and window you could possibly leave open.

  • They are all custom made so it you have to wait for the product. Depending on the season manufacturing time will vary. Most doors or windows take 2-4 weeks but may run longer based on demand and manufacturing capabilities. However you have to wonder is there really a price you can put on you or your families security.

  • Another is the key to unlock the door cannot be duplicated like your house key can, however your service tech should supply you with a code for the door which you can call in and get a new one replaced, but losing that key means you could potentially be locked out of your house and not having an easy way in.

  • Lastly,  the installation, some customers don’t realize what needs to be done. It is not a free standing door, part of its great security system  is that you can just take it off like other doors. Once Its bolted to the frame of the house it will require a professional to remove making it difficult to move the door if desired. Its really not a do it yourself project. From measuring to installation it take a Professional. That being said some customers want to install themselves, have complained with thedetailed installation process.

As you can see there are pros and cons to this product but if you think it is something you could use at your home or business please contact your local Screenmobile for a FREE estimate.

Summer Fun

June 6, 2011 at 11:03 PMMonty Walker

You know that summer is coming when people start wearing shorts and t-shirts instead of heavy sweaters, warm boots and long pants. We all love the time of year when we get to trade in our winter gear for swimsuits and flip flops so we can enjoy the summer sun and refreshing water.

If you don’t have your own pool, you can have some fun in the water at a local water park, community pool, river, lake or at the beach. However, the summer heat usually brings annoying bugs which are attracted to not only to your food, but also your warm skin that is fully exposed by shorts and bathing suits.

As if itching wasn’t enough and we still need another reason to avoid bugs, Insects can carry diseases in them which can enter your blood stream when they bite or sting you. It’s important to protect yourself and your family from more than just a simple bug bite. You’re also protecting them from strange diseases.

If you’re fortunate enough to have your own pool right outside your backdoor, you can enjoy taking a dip anytime. And to keep the insects away, you can install a pool screen enclosure. This will help you to keep bugs out and avoid being eaten alive by mosquitoes, gnats, no-see-ums, or other insects.

If you don’t have your own pool, but enjoy splashing around in the water at the beach, lake or community pool, we recommend that you invest in some good insect repellant to keep the bugs away.

Whether you have to travel long miles or mere feet to enjoy some fun in the water this summer, make sure you don’t invite the bugs to your party!
